Apple will stop selling the iPhone SE and the iPhone 14 series by the end of the year due to the upcoming USB-C universal charging cable standard implementation in the EU. The company plans to release a new fourth-generation iPhone SE in spring 2025, which will include a USB-C port. Outside the EU, Apple is expected to continue selling the SE and the iPhone 14s until the end of 2025.
Apple has suspended sales of the iPhone SE and iPhone 14 in Europe following the arrival of the USB-C standard.
Apple announced that it would stop selling the iPhone SE and the iPhone 14 series by the end of the year, according to iGeneration, as the USB-C universal charging cable standard will be implemented by December. Up until now, the oldest phones that Apple sells directly are the third-generation iPhone SE, the iPhone 14, and the iPhone 14 Plus. These phones violate the European Union policy, which will be implemented from January 1, 2025. Apple could have released new versions of these devices using USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, but it did not. Instead, the company decided to make earlier end-of-life decisions for these models. However, the loss is not significant. In the spring of 2025, Apple plans to release a new fourth-generation iPhone SE, which will definitely include a USB-C port. (The new iPhone SE will have a similar design to the iPhone 14, with a front-facing display, an upgraded camera, and USB-C charging functionality.) According to Apple's usual schedule, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus will continue to be sold in Europe until the iPhone 17 is released in the fall. At that point, the iPhone 14s will be removed from the lineup. Therefore, Apple missed approximately one year of sales for these units. Outside of the EU, Apple is expected to continue selling the SE until the new SE is released, and the iPhone 14s will continue to be sold until the end of 2025. At that point, the era of Lightning ports for Apple devices will finally come to an end.
