Apple introduced satellite communication in iPhone 14, initially supported by Globalstar. In 2023, T-Mobile and SpaceX are collaborating on adding Starlink connectivity to iPhones via iOS 18.3 update. The current beta program allows limited text messaging; data and voice features are planned for future updates. This expansion is exclusive to the United States, contrasting with Apple's global Globalstar service.
iOS 18.3 includes advanced connection features for selected iPhone users, including Starlink.

Apple introduced the first satellite connection feature in smartphones with the iPhone 14 released in 2022. This function allows users to communicate with emergency services and loved ones beyond traditional cellular network coverage. iOS 18 upgraded this feature, enabling users to send messages to friends and family using satellite connections.

Initially, Globalstar supported this satellite connection feature for iPhone users. According to Bloomberg, Apple now mentions that it is "collaborating with SpaceX and T-Mobile in secret to add Starlink satellite connectivity to the iPhone."

T-Mobile and SpaceX formed a partnership in 2022. Previously, T-Mobile had stated that only Samsung phones supported Starlink connectivity. The supplier opened registration for the beta program in December.

Bloomberg's report indicates that T-Mobile recently allowed "a few iPhones" to test the initial version of the Starlink service. This expansion is related to iOS 18.3, but Apple did not mention this change in its update notes.

T-mobile informed specific users: "You are participating in the T-mobile Starlink beta program. Now you can maintain satellite connectivity via text from almost anywhere. To experience a broader coverage, please update to iOS 18.3." This week, T-mobile also updated its support website to confirm that the Starlink satellite service now supports iPhones.

T-Mobile's current Starlink implementation is limited to text messaging only, but both companies plan to extend the functionality in the future by including data and voice call features.

When an iPhone from T-Mobile is in an area without cellular connectivity, devices in the Starlink program will first try to pair with SpaceX's satellites. Users can also send messages through the Globalstar service or call emergency contacts via Apple.

The initial version of Starlink is limited to sending text messages. However, SpaceX and T-Mobile have announced plans to extend data connection and communication services in the future. This program is currently available only in the United States. It contrasts with Apple's Globalstar service, which operates in multiple countries. SpaceX aims to expand Starlink to other global telecom companies.

Bloomberg highlights another important difference between Globalstar and Starlink satellite connections.

There is another important difference between the two services. The current Apple feature requires users to point their iPhone at the sky to find the satellites. In contrast, the Starlink option is designed to work automatically, and it can operate even if a customer's mobile phone is inside a bag.

T-Mobile announced its expectation of providing Starlink connectivity to all users by 2025. T-Mobile customers can join the beta program on their company's website.
