SpaceX is preparing to test a new Direct-to-Cell (DTC) Starlink satellite service. The DTC service aims to provide mobile communication connections in remote areas that are not covered by traditional cellular networks.

The DTC beta test will begin on January 27, 2025, and continue until July 26, 2025. This new service is based on SpaceX's existing Starlink network, which already includes more than 46 million users and consists of almost 7,000 low Earth orbit satellites.

The satellites will function similarly to ground cell towers but will include eNodeB modems located in the air. These modems will help transmit data to the ground network and partner telecom companies, and they are designed to be compatible with current smartphones, so no new hardware is required.

T-Mobile's test will focus on text messaging initially, and plans to add data and voice features later. The test will start from the phase of launching the satellite, followed by positioning it in orbit and raising its orbit. For DTC service to fully transition during the test, it must meet the target data speeds and reliability goals. T-Mobile users who have already joined the alpha test can check their emails if they want to test this feature.

All DTC equipment-equipped satellites will perform regular Starlink tasks in addition to fulfilling the role of a cell tower. This means that internet services related to Starlink could be affected. SpaceX requested and received compensation as it entered this beta phase. The main purpose of this test is to confirm how well the entire DTC equipment system works and to determine necessary improvements before a wider launch.

This technology can be useful for personal communication and emergency situations, especially in remote areas. It can also be used for navigation through map services if there are no traditional mobile phone services available.
