VLC is one of the most popular multi-platform media players, and the company that created the VLC app, VideoLAN, is currently working on major updates. Soon, users will be able to access AI-generated subtitles in multiple languages, both online and offline.

AI-generated subtitles are set to be introduced into VLC.

VLC previewed its technology at CES 2025 and shared some videos that were currently running. By default, VLC uses artificial intelligence to automatically generate subtitles for videos. Artificial intelligence can also translate subtitles in real-time into all languages.

At the same time, the automatic translation function is translating subtitles into the customer's language," Kempf said, adding that they plan to support over 100 languages. "The important thing is that all of this runs offline on a local machine without any cloud service. It executes directly within the executable file.

VideoLAN demonstrated an open-source artificial intelligence model generating real-time subtitles in various languages from a series of videos shared on the X platform. The company stated that this feature will be applicable not only to pre-recorded videos but also to live broadcasts.

The Verge mentioned that VideoLAN showcased a new feature implemented directly within the VLC app, which includes a subtitle generation plugin based on OpenAI's Whisper. However, it is unclear when this functionality will be publicly available.

In March 2024, VideoLAN announced the development of VLC version 4.0. This update is a major update that rewrites the "core" of the app. The currently under-development update includes an updated interface and several new features. VideoLAN also announced the development of a version for Apple Vision Pro.
