Apple announced updates to app store taxes and pricing in multiple countries.

Apple has announced tax and pricing updates for the App Store and other digital stores in various markets, with some changes taking effect immediately. Some changes are planned to be implemented over the next few weeks and months.

February Tax and Pricing Updates

Apple updated its tax and pricing policies in five markets today.

  • Azerbaijan: Introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) at a rate of 18%.
  • Peru: Implementation of an 18% Value Added Tax
  • Slovakia: Standard VAT rate increased from 20% to 23%.
  • Slovakia: E-book tax rate reduced to 5%.
  • Estonia: Reduced tax rate for news publications, magazines and other journals increased from 5% to 9%.
  • Finland: E-book VAT rate increased from 10% to 14%.

Azerbaijan and Peru will see more changes later this month.

If your app or in-app purchases have not selected Azerbaijan or Peru as the base store, the prices of apps and in-app purchases in these stores will be updated. These updates also take into account the introduction of VAT mentioned in part of the tax update list above.

If you choose the Azerbaijan or Peru store as the baseline for your app or in-app purchases, the prices will not change. In other stores, prices will be updated to align with your chosen baseline price.

Japan April Updates

Additionally, Apple has provided details on upcoming changes to be implemented in Japan on April 1st.

Due to changes in Japanese tax regulations last year, Apple (through its iTunes K.K. in Japan) is now designated as a "Specific Platform Operator" by the National Tax Agency of Japan. All paid applications and in-app purchases (including game items such as coins) sold on the Japanese App Store by non-Japanese developers will be subject to the platform tax system. Apple will collect 10% of Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT) from users at the time of purchase and pay it to the National Tax Agency of Japan. Your revenue will be adjusted accordingly.
