One year ago today, I was in line at the Apple Lakefront store in New Orleans waiting to experience a demo of the Apple Vision Pro. I arrived an hour early, expecting a long queue. However, even if I had arrived ten minutes later, I would still have been first in line. It was the release day of the Apple Vision Pro, a product that had been announced eight months prior, and many people were still discovering it was now available.

A year on, through software updates, the Apple Vision Pro has seen its functionality enhanced, making it more powerful than at launch.

Adding depth to ordinary photos is astonishingly impressive. Extending your Mac display to two side-by-side 5K displays is remarkably impressive. Most importantly, the Apple Vision Pro has become the world's best personal portable immersive cinema.

However, as the one-year mark arrives, there are no more excuses for the Apple Vision Pro. We can no longer use "it's only the first year" to excuse the shortcomings of the Apple Vision Pro.

In the past week, where have been the immersive sports replays? Instead of last year's events? When will there be an immersive film because it's a good movie and not because of its novel format? How long will it be before Apple releases more native visionOS versions of iPad apps instead of relying on compatibility folders?

As the Apple Vision Pro celebrates its first anniversary, we can no longer downplay many concerns as if it were a brand-new platform. The $3500 price tag still shields it from the harsher scrutiny of mainstream adoption. But if the company wants to continue down the Apple Vision path, before releasing more affordable versions, it needs to address more of these early flaws.
